How do you calculate GST from a total NZ?
To find the GST component inside a GST-inclusive total, multiply the total by 3 then divide by 23. This is the IRD-prescribed method. For example $115 multiplied by 3 equals $345, divided by 23 equals $15 GST. The ex-GST price is $115 minus $15 equals $100. Our Find GST mode does this automatically.
How do I calculate the GST from an amount?
If you have a price excluding GST, multiply it by 0.15 to get the GST amount. Then add the GST to your original price to get the GST-inclusive total. So $100 multiplied by 0.15 equals $15 GST, and $100 plus $15 equals $115 including GST. Use our Add GST mode to do this instantly.
Is GST in NZ 15%?
Yes. New Zealand GST has been 15% since 1 October 2010, when it was raised from 12.5% by the National government. The 15% rate applies to most goods and services. Some supplies are zero-rated at 0% — mainly exports and the sale of a going concern. Residential rent and most financial services are exempt from GST entirely.
How do I take GST off a price?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.15. This gives you the price before GST. For example $230 divided by 1.15 equals $200 excluding GST. The GST component is $30. Use our Remove GST mode to calculate this instantly for any amount.
When do I need to register for GST in NZ?
GST registration is compulsory when your business turnover exceeds $60,000 in any rolling 12-month period. Turnover means total sales, not profit. You have 21 days from crossing the threshold to register with IRD. You can register voluntarily below $60,000 if it makes sense for your business — particularly useful if most of your customers are GST-registered businesses who can claim back the GST anyway.
How often do I file a GST return?
Most NZ businesses file two-monthly. IRD defaults new registrations to two-monthly. Six-monthly filing is available if your turnover is under $500,000, but is not recommended — waiting six months means a larger lump sum payment and it's easy to spend the money before the bill arrives. Monthly filing is compulsory if your turnover exceeds $24 million.
