The report says providers supplied aggregated data covering 3,351,406 members with $138.37 billion of balances at 31 December 2025, approximately 98% of the total member base.
Are median KiwiSaver balances by age available?
The 2026 demographic study publishes average balances by age band, but it does not publish a median balance for each age band. This page therefore does not estimate or invent median values. The study also publishes how members are distributed across broad balance ranges, which helps show why an average alone should not be read as a typical or recommended balance.
How to interpret your KiwiSaver balance for your age
A comparison with an age-group average can answer a narrow question: how your current balance differs from the average balance held by members in that age band in this dataset. It cannot tell you whether you are on track for the retirement lifestyle you want.
Balances can differ because members have different incomes, contribution rates, years in KiwiSaver, periods outside paid work, first-home or other permitted withdrawals, fund choices and investment returns. The Retirement Commission also cautions that the survey, although very broad, can contain coverage biases and should be interpreted carefully.
Use the comparison as context, not a target. If you want to estimate what your own balance could become by age 65, use the KiwiSaver Calculator NZ. That page models your own salary, balance, contribution settings and investment assumptions rather than comparing you with a cohort average.
