How this personal loan calculator works

The calculator uses the standard amortising-loan formula. Interest is applied to the outstanding balance each repayment period. It then adds the entered account fee and models any extra repayment until the balance reaches zero.

CostHow it is treated
InterestCalculated from the entered annual rate and repayment frequency.
Establishment feeEither added to the financed balance or treated as an upfront cost.
Monthly feeConverted into an equivalent amount for the selected repayment frequency.
Extra repaymentsApplied to principal after interest and the regular fee.

Compare personal loans by total cost

A lower advertised rate does not always mean a lower total cost. Compare the repayment, total interest, establishment fee, ongoing fees, early repayment rules and the amount repaid over the full term.

Personal Loan Calculator NZ: Repayments, Interest & Fees FAQs

What is a personal loan repayment?

It is the regular amount paid to reduce the amount borrowed and cover interest and any ongoing fees. The frequency may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Does the calculator include loan fees?

Yes. You can enter an establishment fee and a monthly account fee. Check the lender disclosure because actual fees and treatment can differ.

Can extra repayments reduce interest?

Usually, paying principal earlier reduces future interest, but the saving depends on the contract and whether early repayment fees apply.

Is this a loan offer or affordability approval?

No. It is a general estimate. A lender must assess the application and provide the actual rate, fees, repayment amount and disclosure.

Should I compare the interest rate or total repayment?

Compare both. The total repayment captures interest and entered fees across the term, while the rate alone does not show every cost.
