How does inflation change the value of money?

Inflation compounds. If prices rise at the same annual percentage for several years, maintaining the same purchasing power requires an amount that grows by (1 + inflation rate)years.

Future value, salary adjustment and purchasing power

Future-cost mode answers questions such as “what salary would I need in 10 years to maintain purchasing power if inflation averaged 3%?” Purchasing-power mode asks the reverse: “what would today's $100,000 feel like after 10 years of 3% inflation if the dollar amount did not increase?”

Compound inflation formula: future amount = current amount × (1 + annual inflation rate)years.

For official historical NZ inflation

The Reserve Bank's inflation calculator uses price data mostly from Stats NZ and can compare purchasing power between historical dates. Stats NZ publishes the Consumers Price Index, New Zealand's principal household inflation measure.

Frequently asked questions

What does an inflation calculator do?

It shows how a chosen inflation rate compounds over time and how much money would be needed in the future to have similar purchasing power under that assumption.

Is this the official New Zealand CPI inflation calculator?

No. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand provides the official historical inflation calculator using price data mostly from Stats NZ. This NZ Calculator page is for custom future-rate, salary and purchasing-power scenarios.

What is CPI?

The consumers price index measures changes in prices for a basket of goods and services purchased by New Zealand households and is a key measure of inflation.

Can I use this as a salary inflation calculator?

Yes. Enter your current salary as the amount and an assumed annual inflation rate to estimate the future salary needed to maintain the same purchasing power under that assumption.

Can I calculate future prices?

Yes. Future cost mode compounds the amount by the entered annual inflation rate for the selected number of years.

Can I calculate purchasing power after inflation?

Yes. Purchasing-power mode discounts the current amount by the entered inflation rate to show the approximate real value after the selected period.

What inflation rate should I enter?

Use a rate relevant to your scenario. Do not assume the current annual CPI rate will persist for many years. For historical New Zealand inflation, use the Reserve Bank's official calculator.

Why might my personal cost increases differ from CPI?

Households buy different mixes of goods and services. A broad CPI measure may not match the price changes in your own spending pattern.
