Credit Card Repayment Calculator NZ
Model an existing interest-bearing credit card balance using your annual rate and payment rule. Compare a changing minimum payment with a fixed monthly payment.
Last reviewed by NZ Calculator:
How long will my credit card take to repay?
Payoff time depends on the balance, interest rate and how much you actually pay each month. Percentage-based minimum payments can shrink as the balance falls, while a fixed payment keeps more pressure on principal.

Your payoff estimate
Use your card issuer's actual repayment rule. Different cards can calculate minimum payments and interest differently.
Minimum repayment vs fixed payment
Use the minimum-payment mode to test a percentage of balance with a dollar minimum, then add an optional extra amount. Use fixed-payment mode if you want to see how a consistent monthly payment changes payoff time.
What is not included?
- New purchases or cash advances
- Interest-free days
- Balance-transfer promotional periods
- Late-payment or over-limit fees

Frequently asked questions
How do credit card repayments work?
Interest is generally charged on the outstanding balance under the card's terms, while the required minimum payment may change as the balance changes. This calculator uses the APR, minimum percentage, minimum dollar amount and any extra payment you enter.
What is a credit card repayment calculator?
It is a planning tool that simulates how an outstanding credit-card balance could reduce over time under a stated interest rate and payment rule.
Why can minimum credit card repayments take so long?
As the balance falls, a percentage-based minimum can also fall. That can slow principal reduction and increase the time over which interest is charged.
Can I test a fixed monthly payment?
Yes. Use Fixed monthly payment mode to compare a chosen payment with a percentage-based minimum repayment.
Does this include interest-free days?
No. It assumes an existing interest-bearing balance. New purchases, interest-free days, balance transfers and promotional rates are not modelled.
Can I use this for a balance-transfer card?
Only after entering the applicable interest rate. A promotional rate that changes later needs to be modelled separately because this calculator assumes one rate.
What if my payment is less than the monthly interest?
The balance will not reduce. Increase the payment or contact the card provider if the required repayment is unaffordable.
Is paying more than the minimum worthwhile?
Mathematically, paying more principal earlier reduces the balance on which later interest is calculated, assuming no offsetting fees or new spending.
