How do I plan debt repayment?

List each balance, interest rate and minimum payment, then decide how much extra you can consistently pay. Keep minimum payments going and direct the extra amount using either the highest-rate avalanche or smallest-balance snowball strategy.

If your minimum payments do not cover monthly interest, the simulation may not repay the debt. Contact lenders or a financial mentor if repayments are unaffordable.

Debt avalanche vs debt snowball

Avalanche: keep minimum payments on every debt and direct extra money to the highest-interest balance. Snowball: direct extra money to the smallest balance first. When a debt clears, its former minimum payment is rolled into the remaining debts.

What this calculator does not model

Frequently asked questions

What is a debt repayment plan?

A debt repayment plan sets out what you owe, the minimum payments and how any extra money will be directed until the balances are cleared.

What is the debt avalanche method?

The avalanche strategy directs extra money to the debt with the highest interest rate first while maintaining minimum payments on the others. It is designed to reduce interest cost.

What is the debt snowball method?

The snowball strategy directs extra money to the smallest balance first. It may not minimise interest, but some people prefer the faster early milestones.

How do I calculate how long debt repayment will take?

The calculator simulates monthly interest, minimum payments and the chosen extra payment strategy until all entered balances reach zero.

Can I use this for student loans?

This tool is designed for interest-bearing consumer debts. New Zealand student-loan repayment rules are different, so use Inland Revenue information for student-loan obligations.

Is a Debt Repayment Order the same as this calculator?

No. A Debt Repayment Order is a formal New Zealand insolvency option administered through the Insolvency and Trustee Service. This page only models voluntary repayments.

What if I cannot afford the minimum repayments?

Contact the lender early. New Zealand consumer guidance explains payment-problem and hardship options. This calculator is not a substitute for financial mentoring, legal advice or lender hardship processes.

Should I consolidate my debts?

Consolidation can simplify payments, but a lower regular payment can still cost more if the interest rate, fees or term are unfavourable. Compare total cost and contract terms, not just the payment amount.
